General aims

1)   To examine the extent to which the very sensitive rural environment and the wild life on the south side of Poole harbour, Dorset is affected by:

• Ø Tourism

• Ø The commercial shipping and the recreational use of the waters of Poole Harbour

• Ø The spread of housing and commercial development.

2)   To asses the extent to which these conflicting interests in the area can be reconciled by careful management to allow more sustainable development which does not conflict with the conservation and wild life value of the area.

Hypotheses

1)   The developing conflicts between the growing tourism industry and the areas of conservation and wild life interests.

2)   The various conflicts between tourists and local people and the possible knock on effect to wildlife in the Poole Harbour area.

3)   The planning applications for large housing and commercial developments right on the edge of the Dorset heath land area are a major threat to such rare and famous habitats.

4)   With careful management the various conflicts can be reconciled, and developed in a more sustainable way, to avoid damaging scenery, vegetation and wild life.
